BUILDING SIGHT

Left or abandoned human-made compositions integrate with our environment, almost like an archeological site. Poorly managed and funded construction sites often leave a distinct visual pattern. For Building Site I explore this instance, the moment of how things are once they are put aside; when they stop being functional. This inversion of the meaning of construction is just as evident in my neighborhood of Brooklyn as it is my hometown of Mexico City.

This language of the un-functional is found all over Mexico City, most characteristically on billboards with expired advertising contracts. Instead of removing the advertisement, the management rearranges the panels of the ad in random order to disrupt legibility. Similarly, I played with the prints I created and integrated into this construction site, whose contract has expired. The tracks of the concrete follow an unusual mix and pattern, subscribing to the language of the un-functional.

_* For this line of work Gabriela collaborated with Master Printer, Kathy Caraccio, at her studio, a run of 8 large scale prints were created to be part of her installation. The reason why collaborating with Caraccio works so well it is because she has a clear understanding of how in Gabriela’s work there is a constant dialogue between print and sculpture. _
